The Fox and the Grapes

The Fox and the Grapes

Story Summary

The fable about speaking ill of what one cannot get.

On a sunny day, there was a fox strolling in the forest. As it walked, it came to the outside of a vineyard. The grapevines were full of bunches of ripe purple grapes. Those grapes looked big and round, and in the sunlight, they sparkled like purple gems. The fox stood under the grape trellis, looking up with its eyes fixed on those tempting grapes, almost drooling.

The fox jumps up to pick grapes

The fox thought to itself that it must eat such delicious grapes. So, it took a few steps back, then rushed forward suddenly and jumped high, trying to reach those grapes. However, the grape trellis was really too high. The fox jumped several times without even touching the grape leaves.

The fox gives up and says the grapes are sour

The fox was panting from jumping. It found that no matter how hard it tried, it couldn't reach those grapes. Finally, it gave up helplessly. While walking away, the fox still turned its head and said to the grape trellis, "Humph, these grapes must be sour and not delicious. I don't care about them at all." After that, it swaggered away from the vineyard. This story tells us that some people will make all kinds of excuses to say that something is not good when they are not capable enough to get it.
