Story Summary

An old man living in a seaside cottage teaches children about marine life.

On the seashore in Norway, there is a small seaside cottage. This cottage seems to have been around for quite some time. The walls, slightly mottled by the sea breeze, are full of a warm and cozy atmosphere. An amiable old man lives in the cottage. His hair is grizzled and his face is covered with wrinkles of the years, but his eyes are still bright, as if they hold countless ocean secrets.

The children from the nearby village always like to come to the seaside cottage to play. The old man also welcomes the children very much. He thinks these children are as full of vitality as little seagulls.

The old man points at a shell and explains

One day, the children picked up some beautiful shells on the seashore. They ran to the old man with the shells in their hands and asked curiously, "Grandpa, what are these shells called?" The old man took the shells with a smile, sat on the beach, and began to explain to the children. "Look, this shell with spiral lines is called a conch shell. Conches are sea creatures that live in their own little houses. Sometimes they stretch out their soft bodies and crawl slowly in the sea." The children were fascinated and stared intently at the shells in the old man's hands.

The children touch a starfish in the shallow sea

A few days later, the old man led the children into the shallow sea area. The sea water was cool and crystal - clear. The old man pointed at a starfish on the seabed and said, "Children, look at that starfish. It has five arm - like things, just like a star. Starfish are amazing creatures. They can regenerate. If one of its arms is broken off, it can grow back." The children carefully reached out their hands to touch the starfish, feeling this magical sea creature.

The children watch the old man show a jellyfish

Another time, the old man took out a glass tank in the cottage. There was a transparent jellyfish in it. The children gathered around, their eyes full of surprise. The old man said, "This is a jellyfish. Its body is soft and mostly made up of water. When a jellyfish swims in the sea, it looks like a transparent little umbrella floating. However, some jellyfish are poisonous and cannot be touched casually." The children couldn't help but be in awe of this beautiful yet dangerous creature.

As time went by, under the old man's teaching, the children got to know more and more sea creatures, and they also had a deeper love and respect for the sea. And the seaside cottage has become a warm little classroom for children to explore the mysteries of the ocean.
