Story Summary

The giant Atlas, punished to hold up the sky forever, shows the importance of responsibility and perseverance.

A long, long time ago, in the mythological world of Greece, there was a giant named Atlas. He was of enormous size and had infinite strength, and was originally one of the Titans. At that time, a fierce war broke out between the Titans and the Olympians. Atlas took the side of the Titans in the war and fought against the Olympians led by Zeus.

However, the Titans were ultimately defeated. As the victorious side, Zeus decided to punish Atlas. So, he assigned Atlas an extremely arduous task - to hold up the sky forever.

Atlas standing on the earth

At first, Atlas thought this punishment was too heavy and he was almost crushed. The sky was so vast and heavy, like a mountain that could never be escaped. His shoulders ached from the weight of the sky, and his legs trembled slightly. But he knew there was no way to escape. This was the punishment given to him by Zeus and he had to accept it.

So, Atlas slowly adjusted his posture and used his arms and shoulders to hold up the sky steadily. Every day, he just stood like this, watching the sun rise and set, and the moon appear and disappear. The surrounding world was constantly changing, but he could only keep this position all the time.

Atlas persevering in the storm

Sometimes, there would be stormy weather. The strong wind howled past, trying to blow Atlas down. The raindrops hit him hard like beans, the lightning flashed around him, and the thunder rumbled. However, Atlas was not defeated by these difficulties. He gritted his teeth tightly and held up the sky even more forcefully. He knew that if he ever fell, the sky would collapse and the whole world would be plunged into disaster.

As time passed, Atlas had become accustomed to the life of holding up the sky. His sense of responsibility grew stronger and stronger. He knew that he was shouldering the safety of the whole world. Even though he was very tired and wanted to rest, he never gave up.

Other gods and humans, seeing Atlas holding up the sky day after day and year after year, were all moved by his perseverance and sense of responsibility. His story spread across the land of Greece and became a legend on people's lips. People learned from his story the importance of responsibility and perseverance. No matter how great the difficulties are, they should be bravely borne and persistently overcome.
