Cutting One's Feet to Fit One's Shoes

Cutting One's Feet to Fit One's Shoes

Story Summary

A fable about being inflexible.

Once upon a time, there was a man from the state of Zheng. He was extremely stupid and stubborn. He bought a pair of shoes at the market. When he got home, he found that the shoes were a little small.

A man looking at his feet

He tried several times, but he couldn't comfortably fit his feet into the shoes. At this time, if it were an ordinary person, he might consider exchanging the shoes for a larger pair, or simply giving the shoes to someone else and buying a suitable pair again. But this man from Zheng didn't think so. All he could think about was that he must wear this pair of shoes that he had already bought.

The man from Zheng holding a knife against his feet

Suddenly, he came up with an idea. He picked up the knife and began to cut his feet without hesitation. He thought that as long as he made his feet a little smaller, he could put on those shoes. The people around him were horrified when they saw what he was doing and came to dissuade him one after another, telling him that this was extremely stupid and dangerous. But this man from Zheng simply wouldn't listen. All he wanted was to make his feet fit the size of the shoes.

The man from Zheng putting on the shoes with his bleeding feet

Finally, he managed to cut his feet so that they could fit into the shoes. But his feet were already bleeding profusely, and he could hardly walk because of the pain. He limped along, and the people around him pointed at him and thought he was really stupid. This story tells us that when we encounter problems in life, we must learn to be flexible and not solve problems in such a stupid and self - harming way like this man from Zheng.
