The Frog in the Well

The Frog in the Well

Story Summary

A fable satirizing those with narrow views.

Once upon a time, there was a very deep well, and a frog lived in it. This frog had been living at the bottom of the well for a long, long time. It thought this well was the whole world. Every day, it swam back and forth in the small puddle at the bottom of the well. When it was hungry, it ate the small insects on the well wall, and when it was tired, it lay on the muddy ground at the bottom of the well to rest.

The frog looking at the well wall

One day, a little bird flew to the wellhead. When the little bird saw the frog at the bottom of the well, it greeted the frog, "Hi, frog friend. Why do you live in such a small place?" The frog was very unconvinced when it heard this. It raised its head and said to the little bird, "What do you know? It's great here. I have plenty of water here, and there are endless insects to eat. This is the best place in the world." The little bird shook its head and said, "You are so short - sighted. The outside world is huge. There are endless fields, high mountains, and wide rivers."

The frog looking puzzled

The frog was very puzzled when it heard the little bird's words. It couldn't understand what the little bird was talking about. It jumped up and down at the bottom of the well, trying to jump a little higher to see outside, but it could only see the small patch of sky above the wellhead. Still, the frog didn't believe what the little bird said. It thought the little bird was lying to it. The frog said to the little bird, "I don't believe you. You must be trying to deceive me and make me leave my home."

The little bird flew away

Seeing that the frog didn't believe it, the little bird didn't argue with the frog any more. It shook its head helplessly and then flapped its wings and flew away. The frog still lived its small life at the bottom of the well, and it still laughed at the little bird in its heart, thinking that all the little bird said was false. What it didn't know was that because of its narrow - mindedness, it had missed the rich and colorful outside world. This story tells us not to be like the frog at the bottom of the well, short - sighted, but to go out more and see the outside world to increase our knowledge.
