Mr Dongguo and the Wolf

Mr Dongguo and the Wolf

Story Summary

The kind Mr. Dongguo saved a wolf but was betrayed by it.

Once upon a time, there was a scholar named Mr. Dongguo. He was kind - hearted and full of pity for everything in the world. On this day, Mr. Dongguo rode his little donkey and carried a bag of books, preparing to go to a distant place to study. He walked on a remote path, surrounded by thick woods.

Mr. Dongguo Meets the Wolf

Suddenly, he heard a painful whine. Mr. Dongguo followed the sound and found a wolf lying on the roadside, bleeding. When the wolf saw Mr. Dongguo, its eyes were full of pleading. It said that it was being chased by hunters and was injured, and begged Mr. Dongguo to save it. Mr. Dongguo felt sympathetic and, after thinking for a while, decided to pour out the books from the bag and let the wolf hide in it.

The Wolf Hides in the Bag

Mr. Dongguo carefully put the wolf into the bag and tied the mouth of the bag tightly. Soon, the hunter came after. He asked Mr. Dongguo if he had seen a wolf. Mr. Dongguo shook his head and said no. The hunter saw that Mr. Dongguo was a scholar and believed his words, then rode away on his horse.

The Wolf Comes out of the Bag

When the hunter was far away, Mr. Dongguo let the wolf out of the bag. But as soon as the wolf came out, it showed its ferocious face. It didn't thank Mr. Dongguo for saving its life at all. Instead, it said that it had been hungry for a long time and wanted to eat Mr. Dongguo. Mr. Dongguo was greatly shocked. He could never have imagined that the wolf he had kindly saved would repay kindness with enmity.

Mr. Dongguo Deals with the Wolf

Mr. Dongguo stepped back while reasoning with the wolf, but the wolf simply wouldn't listen. Just as the wolf was about to pounce on Mr. Dongguo, a passing farmer saw this scene. After the farmer had learned what had happened, he came up with an idea.

The Farmer Tricks the Wolf

The farmer said to the wolf, "This bag is so small. How could it hold such a big wolf as you? You have to get in again and show me. Then I will believe that you were in this bag before." The wolf thought the farmer was right, so it got into the bag again.

The Farmer Subdues the Wolf

As soon as the wolf got into the bag, the farmer quickly tied the mouth of the bag tightly and then killed the wolf severely with a hoe. Mr. Dongguo finally breathed a sigh of relief. He was very grateful to the farmer for saving him and also learned from this incident that when dealing with villains like the wolf, one should not only be kind but also be able to distinguish between good and evil and protect oneself.
