Story Summary

A story about animals' imagination of an unknown sound.

Near a peaceful little lake, there lived many small animals, such as little rabbits, little foxes, little monkeys and so on. One day, a little rabbit was leisurely eating grass on the grassland by the lake. Suddenly, it heard a "gudong" sound. The sound was very loud and strange. The little rabbit had never heard such a sound before. It was so frightened that it thought some terrible monster was coming.

The rabbit runs in panic

The little rabbit immediately ran away, shouting as it ran, "Gudong is coming! Gudong is coming!" A little fox was playing nearby. Seeing the little rabbit running so hurriedly, it asked, "Little rabbit, why are you running?" The little rabbit gasped for breath and said, "Gudong is coming. It's a very frightening thing!" Hearing this, the little fox also became afraid and ran along with the little rabbit.

The fox and the rabbit run together

As they were running, they met a little monkey. The little monkey was swinging on a tree. Seeing them so flustered, it curiously asked, "What are you running for?" The little rabbit and the little fox said in unison, "Gudong is coming. Gudong is so scary!" The little monkey also couldn't stay calm. It jumped down from the tree and ran with them.

The monkey joins the running

In this way, more and more small animals joined the escaping group, including little deer, little lambs, little pigs and so on. All of them were very afraid of this thing called "Gudong", and they didn't even know what it looked like. They just kept running.

A group of animals run in panic

Finally, they ran to an elephant. Seeing everyone so flustered, the elephant stopped them and asked, "What's the matter with you? Why are you running so hurriedly?" The small animals chattered, "Gudong is coming. Gudong is going to eat us!" The elephant was very calm. It said, "Gudong? What is that? I'll go and have a look with you."

The elephant leads the animals to go back

So, the elephant led the small animals to walk back. They carefully came to the lake and heard the "gudong" sound again. The elephant took a closer look and found that it was the sound made by a papaya falling into the lake. Only then did the small animals suddenly realize that it was a false alarm.
