The North Wind and the Sun

The North Wind and the Sun

Story Summary

The fable about a competition to take off a pedestrian's coat.

Once upon a time, the North Wind and the Sun had an argument. Both of them thought they were more powerful than the other. So they decided to have a competition to see who could make a passer - by take off his coat first.

The North Wind puffs out his cheeks to blow

The North Wind went first. He puffed out his cheeks and blew a bitterly cold and violent wind with all his might. The wild wind rushed towards the passer - by, making the branches tremble and raising clouds of dust. The passer - by was made a bit unsteady on his feet by this sudden gust of wind, but he wrapped his coat tightly around himself and even turned up his collar to keep out the cold. Seeing this, the North Wind blew even harder, but the harder he blew, the more tightly the passer - by wrapped his coat.

The Sun emits warm rays

Then it was the Sun's turn. The Sun showed a gentle smile and began to slowly emit warm and soft rays. The rays fell on the earth, driving away the cold, melting the ice and snow, and making the flowers gradually bloom. The passer - by felt this warm sunshine, his body relaxed, and a pleasant expression appeared on his face. As the sunshine grew stronger, the passer - by began to feel hot, so he undid the buttons of his coat.

The passer - by takes off his coat and hangs it over his arm

Finally, the passer - by couldn't stand the heat any more. He simply took off his coat, hung it over his arm, and continued on his way happily.

Seeing this, the North Wind had to admit that the Sun was more powerful than himself. This story tells us that gentleness and friendliness are often more likely to achieve the goal than being tough and violent.
