The Prophecy of Tiresias

The Prophecy of Tiresias

Story Summary

The blind prophet predicts the fate of King Oedipus, warning people to be humble in the face of fate.

A long, long time ago in Greece, there was a prince named Oedipus. He was young and brave, full of hope for the future. One day, he heard of a blind seer named Tiresias. This seer had a magical ability to know the future fate.

Oedipus was very curious about his own fate. He decided to seek out Tiresias, hoping to get some revelations about his future from him. After going through numerous hardships, he finally found the place where Tiresias lived.

Oedipus Visits the Seer

Oedipus stood respectfully in front of Tiresias and said, "Respected seer, I wonder what my fate will be." Tiresias sat there, was silent for a while, and then slowly said, "Prince, your fate is full of hardships and tribulations. You will kill your father and marry your mother. This is an unchangeable fate."

After hearing this prophecy, Oedipus was extremely shocked and angry. He thought it was an impossible thing. How could he do such an unethical thing? He thought this blind seer was deliberately deceiving him.

Oedipus Angrily Rebuts

Oedipus angrily said to Tiresias, "You blind old man, how can you say such things to slander me? I am an upright person, and I will never do such a thing." Tiresias calmly replied, "Prince, fate is irresistible, and my prophecies have never been wrong."

Oedipus was unwilling to believe this prophecy, so he decided to leave this place and seek his own fate. He left his hometown and embarked on a long journey.

During the journey, Oedipus encountered many things. Unknowingly, he killed his father. Then, he solved the riddle of the Sphinx, saved Thebes, was hailed as king by the people, and married his mother.

When he finally found out that he had really done what Tiresias had prophesied, that is, killed his father and married his mother, he was extremely painful and desperate. He gouged out his own eyes and began his self - exile.

This story warns people that fate is a powerful force, and we should face it humbly. Don't try to resist fate, because sometimes our resistance may lead us into deeper trouble. We should accept the arrangements of fate with a reverent and humble heart, and at the same time, strive to be a kind and upright person within the track of fate.
