The Farmer and the Snake

The Farmer and the Snake

Story Summary

The fable about a farmer who saves a frozen snake but gets hurt instead.

On a cold winter day, a farmer was about to go home after working in the field. As he walked along the path, he suddenly saw a snake on the roadside. The snake was frozen stiff and looked pitiful. The farmer was a kind - hearted man, and his heart was full of pity when he saw the snake like this.

The farmer picks up the snake

The farmer thought that on such a cold day, the snake would surely freeze to death if it stayed here all the time. So, he carefully picked up the snake and put it in his bosom, intending to warm the snake up with his own body heat. As he walked, he said softly to the snake, "Little snake, don't freeze to death. You'll be all right when you warm up."

The snake wakes up in the farmer's bosom

Gradually, the snake woke up in the farmer's bosom. However, instead of being grateful to the farmer as he had expected, the snake showed a fierce expression. The farmer was very surprised when he saw the snake's appearance. Before the farmer could react, the snake opened its mouth and bit the farmer hard.

The farmer is injured and falls to the ground

After being bitten by the snake, the farmer immediately felt a sharp pain. He never expected that his kindness would be repaid in such a way. He looked at the snake that had bitten him, his eyes full of confusion and disappointment. Then, because of the snake venom, he fell to the ground.

The snake slips away

After biting the farmer, the snake took a look at the farmer lying on the ground and slipped away without any guilt. Only the farmer was left alone on the cold ground. His kindness was not rewarded. Instead, he paid a heavy price for his credulity. This story tells us that we should not be soft - hearted towards the wicked, or we may bring harm to ourselves.
