Once upon a time, near the frontier fortress, there was an old man who was proficient in divination. Everyone called him Sai Weng. Sai Weng raised a lot of horses. These horses were fat and strong, and they were his treasures.
One day, one of Sai Weng's horses suddenly ran to the land of the Hu people. After the neighbors learned of this news, they all came to comfort Sai Weng. They thought that Sai Weng had lost a good horse, which was a very unlucky thing. But Sai Weng was not worried at all. Instead, he smiled and said to the neighbors, "This might be a good thing." The neighbors were very puzzled. They didn't understand why Sai Weng said so. They thought Sai Weng was just consoling himself.
A few months later, the lost horse actually came back with a herd of fine horses of the Hu people. The neighbors all came to congratulate Sai Weng again. They said, "You are so far - sighted. This horse not only came back but also brought back so many good horses. This is really a great joy." However, Sai Weng didn't show any particular joy. He frowned and said, "This may not necessarily be a good thing either. Maybe it will bring disaster." The neighbors thought Sai Weng was really strange. He didn't even know how to be happy when good luck came.
Sai Weng had a son. When he saw that there were suddenly so many fine horses at home, he was very excited. So he often rode out to play. One day, while he was riding, he accidentally fell off the horse and broke his leg. After the neighbors heard this news, they came to comfort Sai Weng again. They said, "Your previous worry has really come true. This is really unfortunate." But Sai Weng was still very calm. He said to the neighbors, "This may turn into a good thing." The neighbors all shook their heads, thinking that Sai Weng was talking nonsense.
Before long, a war broke out at the frontier fortress. The imperial court began to recruit soldiers. All the young men in the village had to go to fight in the war. Many young people lost their lives in the war. But Sai Weng's son couldn't go to war because of his broken leg, and thus his life was saved. At this time, the neighbors really understood what Sai Weng had said. They sighed, "Sai Weng is really a man of great wisdom. Good and bad fortune are really interdependent."
This story tells us that in life, good and bad things can be transformed into each other. When we encounter bad things, don't be too depressed. And when we encounter good things, don't be too carried away. We should keep a normal heart.
