Once upon a time, there was a prince who wanted to marry a real princess. However, he had traveled all over the world but still couldn't find the princess in his heart. He was so frustrated that he had no choice but to return to his own country.
One night, suddenly it began to rain heavily, with lightning and thunder. At this time, there was a knock on the castle gate, and the old king went to open the door in person.
There stood a girl outside the door. She said she was a princess. But she was soaked through by the rain and looked very disheveled. Nevertheless, her temperament was still very elegant. The old queen thought to herself, "We will soon find out whether she is a real princess or not."
The old queen walked into the bedroom. She had all the mattresses carried out and then laid the mattresses on the bed one by one. In total, she laid twenty mattresses and placed a tiny pea under the bottom mattress.
After that, the old queen led the girl into the bedroom and let her sleep on this special bed. The girl was very tired and fell asleep quickly.
The next morning, everyone asked the girl how she had slept. The girl frowned and said, "Oh, my god. I hardly slept a wink all night. I don't know what was on the bed board. It made me bruised all over. It was really uncomfortable."
Hearing what the girl said, the old queen, the prince and the king were all very happy, because only a real princess would have such delicate skin that she could feel a pea under twenty mattresses.
So, the prince proposed to the girl without hesitation, and the girl gladly accepted. Later, they held a grand wedding and lived happily ever after.
