The Wind and the Sun

The Wind and the Sun

Story Summary

The wind and the sun compete to make a pedestrian take off his clothes, an allegory showing the power of gentleness.

Once upon a time, the wind and the sun had an interesting argument. The wind said to the sun proudly, "I'm much more powerful than you. I can make pedestrians take off their clothes quickly." Hearing this, the sun replied with a gentle smile, "I don't think so. I believe I have a more gentle yet effective power." So, they decided to have a competition to see who could make the pedestrian on the road take off his clothes first.

The wind starts to exert its force

First, it was the wind's turn to show its strength. It summoned up all its strength and blew violently towards the pedestrian. The wind roared like an angry giant. It bent the small trees on the roadside, and the leaves rustled and flew all over the sky. The pedestrian on the road was staggered by this sudden strong wind. He wrapped his clothes tightly around himself, held them even more firmly, and even turned up his collar to resist the wind. Seeing this, the wind blew even harder, but the pedestrian never took off his clothes. Instead, he wrapped himself up more tightly because of the cold.

The sun starts to shine

Then, it was the sun's turn. The sun slowly peeked out from behind the clouds and cast warm and gentle sunlight on the earth. The sunlight shone on the pedestrian like a mother's hand gently caressing him. The pedestrian gradually felt the warmth, and his expression changed from tense to relaxed. As the sun continued to release heat, the pedestrian began to feel hot. First, he unbuttoned the collar, then took off his hat, and then removed his coat and hung it over his arm.

Finally, the wind had to admit that the gentle power of the sun was more powerful. This story tells us that sometimes the power of gentleness and friendliness is more effective than that of being tough.
